This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive.
This interview features Ricardo Mireles, founder of Academia Avance, a public charter school in Los Angeles. Ricardo spends most of his interview explaining that computer techonology is a process, not just a product, and that in most of the places where Free Open Source Software is gaining popularity, it is winning because it allows the users to control that process. As an example, he cites Munich, Brazil, and Extremadura, Spain. He tells the story of an instance in which he needed to get some IT work done for his corporate employer and had to contract with a programmer in Argentina and a development team in Denmark, because that's where the expertise was located.
his interview was shot in a storage closet off of a huge public meeting hall at the Desktop Linux Summit at the San Diego County Fairgounds. The storage closet was located immediately next to a busy public restroom, and so you might hear occasional muted flushing in the background. This is our raw "source code" folks! The final version might be a lot different. We like to think that the flushing ads a sense of stark realism and authenticity to our work.
